We are looking for up to ten student veterans to take part in a research project entitled VET-SIM. In this research project, participants will engage in three simulations in real-time with actors who represent other individuals on a college campus (e.g., staff members, college student peers, teaching assistants, faculty members, etc.). In simulations, the actors will present situations common to veterans as they transition from military service to collegiate study. Participation in this study also includes individual debriefings with a research team member, and whole-group debriefings that follow each of the three simulations.
The VET-SIM project is a collaboration between OVMA, IVMF, and the School of Education (SOE) at Syracuse University, and is aimed at helping student veterans cope with the many challenges and /or barriers that come with transitioning to higher education. This is the first time we have conducted such a project. Thus, information we receive from this study will hopefully support future VET-SIM initiatives on the SU campus and eventually help us to scale to other higher education institutions. The simulations will occur between late January 2020 and mid-March 2020. Each person who participates may earn up to $250, recognizing that if you withdraw early from the study, you will not receive the full $250 compensation.
To be eligible to participate in this study, you must have served in the U.S. Armed Forces prior to participation in this study (Marines, Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard), and must be at least 18 years of age. Anyone who has not served in the U.S. Armed Forces prior to participation in this study. The time commitment for this study is approximately 7.5 hours (e.g., 6 different sessions). The research will occur in Sims Hall, a research facility on the Syracuse University campus.
