Keep a promise Syracuse University has been keeping for a century
After the Second World Way, Chancellor Pearson Tolley, one of the original architects of the G.I. Bill, opened Syracuse’s doors to any veteran who wanted a degree. The University had nowhere to put them. It put up Quonset huts and tripled in size rather than turn anyone away. By 1947, roughly 9,000 of Syracuse’s 18,000 students were veterans.
Eighty years later, that is still the offer, and it still isn’t free.
The G.I. Bill is remarkable but it does not cover a life. Neither does ROTC tuition assistance. A student veteran here may be supporting a family, carrying a service-connected injury, and starting a degree a decade after their peers finished theirs. They aren’t choosing between Syracuse and another university. They are choosing a degree and their family’s stability.
