Arturo Sandoval, MBA ’23, a six-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, has been named the most recent recipient of the Gerald B. ’58, ’59 and Roberta M. Faigle ’60 scholarship.
The endowed scholarship seeks to empower military veterans as the next generation of public and private sector leaders committed to service beyond self. Graduate student veterans across Syracuse University’s schools and colleges, both on campus and online are eligible for the award.
“We are grateful for the Faigles’ commitment, dedication and generosity to our student veterans,” says U.S. Army retired Colonel Ron Novack, executive director of the Office of Veterans and Military Affairs. “Their vision for what student veterans can accomplish when supported and empowered is well-aligned with our commitment to serve veterans and military families. Arturo, as well as the inaugural Faigle scholar, are the first of hopefully many honored recipients of this distinguished gift.”
Sandoval, a native of Kennesaw, Georgia, served six years in the Marine Corps in various enlisted roles before commissioning as an oficer. During his time in uniform, he deployed to Iraq, Japan and South Korea. Following his service, he chose to attend Syracuse because of its empassioned staff and extensive veteran resources.
“I plan to not only empower myself,’ says Sandoval. “But show other veterans that we are capable of returning to school and to the work force as stronger individuals than when we first joined the military.”
Sandoval is the second recipient of the Faigle Family Scholarship first endowed in 2019. He is pursuing an online MBA with Syracuse’s Whitman School of Management. In addition to his academic pursuits, Sandoval is an operations manager at Textron Systems and Ironman athlete.

He was commissioned upon graduation and moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he served in the U.S. Air Force for three years. In 1960, Faigle married fellow Syracuse alumna Roberta (Bobbie) Messic ‘60. The entire Faigle family, which includes 26 Syracuse University alum, has named Syracuse University in its giving efforts for many years.
