Aerospace Studies Class ( 1-3 Hours per week)
The Aerospace (AS) curriculum is structured so that each year builds on the last to ensure a systematic and thorough understanding of both foundational and advanced concepts. This design facilitates students’ gradual advancement towards a higher level of expertise and practical application. Typically, the freshman and sophomore courses are one credit hour each, while the junior and senior courses are three credit hours each
The freshmen level courses provide the new cadet with a general overview of the Air and Space Forces. AS101 is focused mainly on self-development, where students will explore subjects such as the military’s values, self-mastery, teamwork, and problem solving.
AS201 will build upon this by focusing on team dynamics and how to lead small units.
Finally, AS301 and AS401 moves from small unit ideas to discussing organizational dynamics and leadership. The senior level courses will also equip the soon-to-be officer with the tools necessary to succeed once on active duty. This sequence ensures a foundation to advanced understanding in leadership and teamwork.
Leadership Laboratory (2 hours per week)
Cadets meet once a week for two hours to complete this requirement and travel to Syracuse University to attend. Leadership Laboratory is broken into two different levels. During the lab environment, the General Military Course cadets (freshmen and sophomores) are instructed by the Professional Officer Course cadets (juniors and seniors) on various topics. Lessons additional instructions for drill and ceremonies, customs and courtesies, leadership, and followership as they prepare their fellow cadets for Field Training.
The Professional Officer Course cadets plan and execute the required training objectives each week, taking on additional responsibility for the coordination of Leadership Laboratory and development of the underclassman cadets.
Physical Training (2 hours per week)
Detachment 535 cadets meet for Physical Training several times each week, varying from the turf at the JMA Wireless Dome to the Barnes Center Gym or even a workout outdoors on the Syracuse campus. During these hour-long workouts, cadets prepare for their Physical Fitness Assessment, familiarize themselves with fellow cadets, and have a chance to lead the detachment in exercises. Workouts are typically dynamic in nature and can include intense levels of both aerobic and anaerobic workouts. Cross-town cadets that do not attend Syracuse University are required to attend Physical Training on campus once per week and need to log an hour-long workout on their own.
The Physical Fitness Assessment consists of one minute of pushups, one minute of sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run. This assessment is conducted every fall and spring semester.
