Governor Andrew Cuomo presents the Upstate Revitalization Initiative Award for “Best Plan” to Central New York Sunday during an event at the Oncenter in Syracuse. Central New York was one of three Upstate regions awarded $500 million to revitalize the economy as part of the Governor’s initiative. Part of the plan includes a new National Veterans Resource Center, building on the work of Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families. From left are the following: Senator John A. DeFrancisco; Robert M. Simpson, president of CenterState CEO and CNY Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) co-chair; Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney; Cuomo; Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli; and Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud, co-chair of the CNY RE

The Cuomo administration selected Central New York as one of three winners in the Upstate Revitalization Initiative, a competition that pitted seven Upstate New York regions against each other for $1.5 billion in aid. The Finger Lakes region and the Southern Tier were the other winners.

The Central New York region will receive $500 million over five years — doled out in roughly equal installments of $100 million a year — to help fund development projects and programs designed to generate long-term job growth.
