Hometown Hero: Raphael Grollmus

United States Marine Corps Veteran Raphael Grollmus was born and raised in Hamilton, Ohio.  

He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2012 and attended boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. After completing Basic Military Police training in 2013, Raphael received orders to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, and he was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron.

2023 Tillman Scholarship Deadline Approaching; Application Advice From 2022 Scholars

Time is running out for potential applicants looking to become one of Syracuse University’s next Tillman Scholars. The scholarship, made available by the Pat Tillman Foundation, is held in high regard as one of the premier academic scholarships for the military-connected community within higher education. The foundation will close the application window this year on Feb. 28 and announce this year’s selected scholars near the end of the spring semester.

OVMA Announces Over $15K in Spring Scholarships for Military-Connected Students

The Office of Veteran and Military Affairs (OVMA) has opened the application window for six different financial scholarships for military-connected students at Syracuse. More than $15,000 is available for military-connected students enrolled during the Spring 2023 semester, with applications closing March 22.

ROTC Cadets Get Airborne Thanks to USAF Lt. Col. Sean Stumpf ’07

Born in the Bronx, Sean Stumpf ’07, often watched planes take off and land at nearby LaGuardia Airport.

That childhood fascination sparked a lifelong passion for aviation that fueled his determination to become a pilot. Today, Stumpf is the one doing the takeoffs and landings, but instead of a commercial airliner he flies the C-130J, also known as the Super Hercules, in the United States Air Force (USAF).

Hometown Hero: Jennifer Aquino

United States Navy Veteran Jennifer Aquino is a native of Puerto Rico. She enlisted into the United States Navy in 2003 She attended boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois, and later become a cryptologic technician collector and interpreter. Petty Officer Aquino served aboard the Nuclear Aircraft Carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower. She also served with the Navy Information Operations Command in both Virginia, and South Texas for a total of 14 years of honorable service. 

Student Veterans Travel to Disney World for 15th Annual NATCON

Military-connected students from Syracuse University returned from a three-day trip to Walt Disney World Resort earlier this month. While many of their classmates enjoyed the remaining class-free days of their winter break, the group of 14 students were in Florida attending the Student Veterans of America 15th Annual National Conference (NATCON).
