United States Navy veteran and Syracuse University student veteran Savion Pollard was born and raised in Queens, New York. Savion graduated from the High School for Construction Trades, Engineering, and Architecture (CTEA) in 2013, and attended CUNY City College and CUNY York College, studying to become an accountant.

Hometown Hero: Tyler Slavicek

Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Tyler C. Slavicek grew up in Southwest Michigan in the town of Bridgman. He has always had a passion for playing soccer, captaining his high school varsity soccer team, and playing for the Lake Michigan Community College Red Hawks. Tyler has continued to be involved with the sport by playing for the Navy and as a varsity soccer coach for Greenbrier Christian Academy in Virginia.

Hometown Hero: Alex Savage

United States Army Veteran Alec Savage was born in Utica, New York In 2017, Alec was commissioned into the United States Army after graduating from the ROTC program at St. Lawrence University. As a cadet, he completed Airborne and Air Assault schools. In 2018 Alec trained at Fort Moore, Georgia, and completed the Infantry Basic Officer Leadership program and U.S. Army Ranger School. In 2019, he earned his Expert Infantry Badge.

Hitting the High Notes: Navy Band Northeast Performance Highlights Navy Week Festivities

When you think of military music, you may imagine the sounds of a rousing march. But as Navy Week sailed into Syracuse, the Navy Band Northeast showed students that they’re about much more than just “Anchors Aweigh.” On Aug. 28, two of the band’s ensembles entertained students at Setnor Auditorium at Crouse College with a variety of classical and jazz pieces. Members even led students in a singalong chorus of the pop anthem “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”

Hometown Hero: Stephen “Josh” Jackson

U.S. Navy Rear Admiral (Lower Half) Stephen “Josh” Jackson was born in Syracuse, New York, and he attended school in the Fayetteville-Manlius School District before receiving an appointment to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and holds a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.
