What is a QCD or an RMD?
QCD (Qualified Charitable Distribution)
If you’re 70½ or older, a QCD allows you to give directly from your IRA to support veterans and military families. This type of gift can lower your taxable income and may also reduce your IRA balance over time, helping to lower future required withdrawals.
RMD (Required Minimum Distribution)
At age 73, you must take annual withdrawals from your IRA; this is known as an RMD. You can satisfy some or all of your RMD by making a QCD to Syracuse University’s veteran-focused programs, both reducing your tax burden and making a meaningful impact.
Why give this way?

- Avoid potential penalties – Once you reach age 73, directing your RMD to charity may satisfy your withdrawal requirement and avoid additional taxes.
