Hometown Hero: Matthew Coyne

United States Army Lieutenant Colonel Matt Coyne was born and raised in Stony Point, New York, and attended the University of Scranton, where he commissioned through the Army ROTC program in 2006. LTC Coyne began his career as a Military Police Platoon Leader, deploying to Eastern Afghanistan in 2007 with the 546th Military Police Company, Fort Stewart, Georgia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Following his deployment, LTC Coyne served in multiple operational assignments, including the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York, where he deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2010.

In 2012, LTC Coyne commanded the 543rd Military Police Company, Fort Drum, New York, deploying to Afghanistan for a third time and leading combat operations across northeastern Afghanistan. He later served in key battalion and regimental operations roles at with the 10th Mountain Division and at Fort Dix, New Jersey, before moving overseas to serve as the Battalion Executive Officer of the 94th Military Police Battalion at Camp Humphreys, South Korea.

Selected by the U.S. Army for a Training with Industry assignment, LTC Coyne served as a fellow with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, and later at the Pentagon as Chief of the National Military Command Center Support Branch.

In 2022, LTC Coyne was selected as the Professor of Military Science at Syracuse University, where today he leads, mentors, and develops future Army officers while strengthening partnerships between the U.S. Army, Syracuse University, and the surrounding community.

LTC Coyne’s awards and decorations include three Bronze Star Medals, the Combat Action Badge, and multiple campaign medals. He and his wife Maria, currently reside in Manlius, New York with their three children, Jamison, Addison, and Caden. LTC Coyne will retire from the U.S. Army this summer following over 20 years of service to our nation.
