Veterans from the Global War on Terror reflect on their transition to Higher Ed on the eve of 9/11 anniversary

Charlie Poag has a photo on his wall from his time serving in Afghanistan.  It isn’t of tanks or of troops or of a memorable fire fight from his tour there. It is of a small Afghani boy of maybe three or four sitting on the ground with his grandfather leaning over him.  The boy is distraught as soldiers search his family’s home, but the toddler is intrigued by a large chocolate bar that the elderly man is helping him open.       

Army ROTC Alumni Reflect on 20th Anniversary of 9/11

hanksville, PA. Since that day in 2001, men and women across the country answered the call to serve – including Syracuse University Army ROTC cadets. While some were already in the service when 9/11, and some joined the service after, both have telling stories and reflections to share as we look back on that tragic day and the Global War on Terrorism.

Our hearts are with the families of the service members killed in Kabul today. And our thoughts are with those Afghan allies and their families that are suffering as this situation continues. Air Force ROTC Welcomes New Commander Lt. Col. Ryan Lippert

Lippert, to Central New York this semester. Born in Illinois, Lippert grew up in Colorado and has adopted Mandeville, Louisiana, as his unofficial hometown. Lippert is an identical twin. His brother is also a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force. Joining him in Syracuse is his wife, a prior service pilot, and their three children, two boys and a girl, 10, eight, and six.

Ryan Marquette: Making His Case

From organizations to internships, Ryan Marquette L’22 has had the chance to explore different areas of law while pursuing a juris doctor at Syracuse University’s College of Law and a master of public administration through the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs—a three-year joint program that combines law and policy. In addition to his rigorous schoolwork, Marquette, a U.S. Army veteran and active member of the Army National Guard, also had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience last summer at the Betty and Michael D. Wohl Veterans Legal Clinic, the Children’s Rights & Family Law Clinic and the Criminal Defense Clinic, gaining exposure to three areas of law in which he previously had little experience.

What is The Warrior Scholar Project?

Ronald Novack (Colonel, U.S. Army, Ret.) Executive Director of Veteran and Military Affairs at Syracuse University spoke with Dave Allen at WSYR this morning to discuss the Warrior Scholar Project! The Warrior-Scholar Project (WSP) hosts intensive, one and two-week college-preparatory academic boot camps for enlisted veterans and transitioning service members. Boot camps are offered in three disciplines: Humanities, STEM, and Business & Entrepreneurship.
